The North Fork American River Alliance has adopted the Big Granite Trail in the Tahoe National Forest. Please join us for a work party to repair damaged sections of the Big Granite Trail. We had scheduled this work party last October but were stopped by the early snows.

The Big Granite Trail is a historic trail that started at Cisco on the railroad, crossed into the North Fork American River drainage at Huysink Lake and followed the drainage of Little Granite Creek and Big Granite Creek to the North Fork American River. In the 1890's this trail became the main supply route for the La Trinidad Mine located on the south side of the river in Sailor Canyon.

Today's trailhead for the Big Granite Trail is located on Forest Road 38 about 1.25 miles past Huysink Lake and is unmarked. The first mile of the trail crosses private property that had timber harvests in the early 1990's and again in 2004. Operations from these timber harvests have resulted in significant damage to the trail in some places and the re-routing of the trail in another. The North Fork American River Alliance through the Adopt a Trail program will be restoring these sections of the trail along with other trail maintenance that is needed.

The main work for this work party will be restoring the trail where the tractors have done significant damage to the ground. Work will involve lopping, hand clearing, raking and shoveling to re-establish the trailbed. All of this work is within the first mile from the trailhead. We plan to meet at the Yuba Gap exit on I-80 at 9:00am on Saturday July 15. It is about 40 minutes to the trailhead from Yuba Gap. The road is best driven in a vehicle with high clearance.

Please let me know if you are interested in this work party. I will contact those interested in early July.
